Where Are They Now: Alfred’s LearningRx Story

Name of LearningRx Graduate: Alfred Edwards
Current Age: 19
Date of LearningRx Graduation: May 2013

“We learned about LearningRx through my mom, who was surfing Facebook and saw an ad. We were looking for something to help Alfred just get through school without meltdowns and high stress. We visited the center, and although we were not sure, we decided to give it a try. Because Alfred did not like change, he had a difficult start, but quickly adjusted and began to cooperate. Thanks to Mrs. Gerri’s patience and determination, Alfred had a successful semester. In fact, his IEP team wanted to revisit his accommodations to make adjustments. That was the change we needed to hear.

At Alfred’s graduation, he was more settled and was willing to work without a struggle. He had a plan and a repetitive structure for processing knowledge and remembering different learning strategies. This was a relief and hope for his mom.

“I felt like it took the sting away from the pain of struggle and hopelessness.” -Mom, Yolanda.

We now had strategies for approaching new information, making decisions, and retaining newly acquired knowledge.

Since graduating from LearningRx, Alfred was a member of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was able to make friends, learn to tie his shoes, ride a bike, go hiking, and camping, where he was able to practice social skills and build friendships. After Boy Scouts, Alfred joined the high school band, where he found his greatest love, music. He played in the Pit for Cleveland High School and enjoyed all four years of marching band. Music was the outlet for expression. Alfred was selected as “Mr. Heart of Cleveland High School”, a senior superlative award nominated by his peers. Alfred also won the “Next Steps” Scholarship from his high school. This award allowed him to use his financial contribution for entering the workforce or to help with undergraduate studies. Alfred just completed his first semester of college.
