Understanding Neurodiversity

When you or a family member is diagnosed with ADHD, autism, or any other cognitive difference, it can feel like you’re navigating a whole new world. You may be exploring options for support, like brain training. You may have gained new perspective into past struggles, or you may be grappling with brand-new worries about the future. Taking time to understand neurodiversity can help you take clear steps forward.

Over the past few decades, our understanding of the human brain has changed dramatically. In particular, innovations like the advent of MRI technology have given us new insights into how the mind works. It’s no surprise, then, that we’re also starting to appreciate the incredible importance of neurodiversity.

What is neurodiversity?

No two minds are alike. The term “neurodiversity” is used as an umbrella term to encompass all the differences between our minds on a neuro-biological level. It can help learners of all ages understand the specific difficulties they face—not just with learning, but with other aspects of life. It can also help us appreciate that every single person is just a little bit different, in their own way.

Let’s look at why that’s important.

Why Neurodiversity Matters

3 Things to Understand About Neurodiversity

Language is an important tool—and as our understanding of the world evolves, our vocabulary changes, too. While neurodiversity is just a term, it can help us all navigate new insights about the human mind.

Taking a judgment-free approach to cognitive differences can be empowering for all ages. In particular, here are three things to consider:

  1. There’s no “right” way to be.
People often have a perception that there’s a “right” way for our brains to function and a “wrong” way. The reality is a lot more complicated. Everyone has different strengths when it comes to the brain. Being different doesn’t indicate a deficit—in fact, cognitive differences can result in unique skills and abilities!
  2. These differences can make us stronger.
When parents discover their learner has ADHD, autism, or other learning differences, it’s easy to worry about their futures. In reality, many people with these conditions thrive, not despite their cognitive abilities but because of them. That includes notable inventors, business leaders, artists, and more!
  3. Understanding helps us provide accommodations.
When people have a better appreciation for neurodiversity, it means we can offer more meaningful support, instead of trying to “fix” cognitive differences. This flexible approach allows learners to embrace the incredible strengths of their condition while getting help when they need it!

A Strength-Based Approach with Neurodiversity

Researchers are increasingly acknowledging that a negative approach to learning differences can misidentify differences as deficits, and can cause significant harm to individuals.

Understanding neurodiversity can help learners and their families to move away from a more negative approach, to celebrate the unique strengths of certain learning differences, and to set up proper support.

For example, while the symptoms of autism can vary enormously from person to person, here are some common strengths to celebrate:

  • Ability to focus deeply on subjects of interest
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills
  • A unique approach to the world

Similarly, ADHD can appear differently for each individual. That said, here are some common traits associated with this condition:

  • Enthusiasm and excitement about topics of interest
  • An aptitude for spontaneity
  • Curiosity and creative abilities

By embracing the positive attributes of learning differences, we can make sure those qualities aren’t ignored, while making sure students get the resources and support they need to excel.
