Understanding How ComprehendRx® Helps Improve Reading Skills

Most of us read every day, whether we’re browsing a restaurant menu or scrolling on social media. It’s easy to forget that reading is an incredibly complex task—one that demands enormous brainpower and draws on many separate abilities. When a learner needs reading help determining the correct course of action requires a deeper look at their existing abilities.

Reading isn’t a skill that appears overnight. It’s a cumulative set of skills that are developed progressively, over time. It’s not just about identifying letter combinations or the sounds they make. It’s also about processing complex sentences, retaining ideas, building a strong vocabulary, and so much more.

That’s why, at LearningRx, we’ve broken our reading help programs into two separate categories. Our ReadRx® program focuses on core reading skills, while ComprehendRx® offers brain training for reading comprehension. Today, we’ll take a closer look at reading comprehension skills, as well as how one-on-one brain training can hone these abilities.

Getting Effective Reading Help: All About Reading Comprehension

What is Reading Comprehension, Anyway?

Being able to decipher letter combinations into identifiable words is no small feat, but it’s just the start of creating a strong foundation of reading skills. Reading comprehension is just as important.

This set of skills allows learners to understand what they read, remember key details, and retrieve ideas when needed. It includes:

  • Visualization.
Translating words and sentences into mental pictures.
  • Processing.
Parsing complex sentences into specific ideas.
  • Retention.
Storing and retrieving key ideas and details from written material.

Why Does Reading Comprehension Matter?

Simply put, reading comprehension is where the real magic of reading happens. It allows us to transform simple markings on a page into mental pictures, concepts, and stories. It’s the stepping stone to a world of learning and ideas:

  • Learning.
Most forms of learning require some level of reading comprehension. From science to computer programming to art, reading proficiency opens up a path for deeper, more meaningful learning.
  • Effective communication.
Our world runs on reading! From sending texts and e-mails to signage, menus, and more, reading allows learners to more easily connect and share ideas with the people around them.
  • Complex thinking.
When students build strong reading comprehension skills, it allows their brains to create new pathways for complex thinking. In doing so, they can improve independent learning and critical thinking abilities!

It’s important to understand that reading comprehension skills aren’t a static ability—they can be improved upon throughout a learner’s lifetime. For those who struggle with these skills, reading help can offer the perfect path for transforming these challenges into triumphs!

Improving Reading Skills with One-on-One Brain Training

At LearningRx, our ComprehendRx® program helps readers build stronger reading comprehension skills, whether they’re kids, teens, or adults. We first assess a student’s existing reading skills, as well as those areas where they face greater challenges.

From there, we’ll develop a personalized reading help program that helps to hone their comprehension skills.

Focused Reading Help for Students Who Struggle

Through our ComprehendRx® program, we help students target the underlying cognitive skills needed for effective reading. These skills include:

  • Working memory.
Building a strong working memory is necessary for retaining and accessing previously read details from the text.
  • Visual processing.
Through visual processing, readers can create mental pictures, absorb complex concepts, and compare ideas.

When learners improve these cognitive skills, they can tap into new reading comprehension skills!

Our brain trainers work closely with each learner throughout every session and can help students with cognitive differences like dyslexia or ADHD. We know that when students can read successfully, it can open up new worlds and possibilities. With our dedicated reading help programs, we help learners discover their unique potential!
