Resources for Celebrating Brain Awareness Week

In 2022, Brain Awareness Week will take place March 14-20. The global campaign is designed to foster public enthusiasm and support for brain science.

Each year, partners host imaginative activities in their communities that share the wonders of the brain and the impact brain science has on our everyday lives. Participating institutions and organizations include K-12 schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, advocacy groups, outreach organizations, medical research facilities, corporations, government agencies, and professional organizations. If you can’t find a Brain Awareness Week (BAW) activity near you, consider some of the following online resources:

1. Brain Awareness Week materials to use at home:

• Truth or Myth Flash Cards (printable in color or black and white)

• Puzzle Pack (available in for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

• Successful Aging Puzzle Packet (answer key also available for download)

• BAW Favorites Puzzle Pack (10 classic BAW puzzles)

2. Brain Awareness Week related content from the Dana Foundation, including:

Left Brain vs. Right Brain (video):

Neuroanatomy: The Basics (article with visuals):

How Stress Affects the Brain (video):

Understanding New Brain Research Models (article with visuals)

When the Myth is the Message: Neuromyths and Education (article)

How do Scientists Study the Brain? (article)

3. “Unlock the Einstein Inside: Applying New Brain Science to Wake Up the Smart in Your Child” by Dr. Ken Gibson (free book download):

SUMMARY: “The name ‘Einstein’ is practically synonymous with ‘smart,” and in this book, Dr. Ken Gibson assures parents that there are techniques to help wake up the ‘Einstein’ in any child. The truth is that dedicated teachers and tutors can give your child all the right educational tools, but the brawn to wield those tools comes from the brain’s underlying cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are so important that even a single weak skills can keep your child from fully grasping, remembering, or applying what he or she is being taught in class or at home, no matter how many times instructions are repeated. This book will show you how your child can learn easier, think faster, and perform better in and out of the classroom.

4. “My Fantabulous Brain: Learning Helps Me Grow!” by Julia Cook, M.S. (paperback $8.99; Kindle $8.95):

SUMMARY: “Learning doesn’t come easy for many children. They struggle with schoolwork, have trouble focusing, and can’t make sense of instructions. Oftentimes, these challenges can cause children to internalize their struggles and question their abilities. In My Fantabulous Brain, Julia Cook helps children understand that everyone needs help sometimes, and there are people who can give us the tools we need to make our brains stronger!”

5. Brain Skills Assessment (prices vary; takes approximately one hour):

This one-hour assessment provides critical information regarding which cognitive skills are strong and which could be causing a learning struggle. There is no obligation to enroll in LearningRx personal brain training, although a tailored program can be created to target and train any weak brain skills based on the results of the assessment.

About Brain Awareness Week

Brain Awareness Week began in 1996 as a modest effort involving just 160 organizations in the United States. DABI organized the first Brain Awareness Week to bring together diverse groups with different interests from academia, government, and professional and advocacy organizations. The goal was to unite them with the common theme that brain research is the hope for treatments, preventions, and possible cures for brain diseases and disorders and to ensure a better quality of life at all ages.

In the 26 years since its founding, Brain Awareness Week has evolved into a global education initiative that has included the participation of more than 7,300 partners in 120 countries. During the 2021 campaign, partner events were held in 45 countries and 32 states.
