Defining Brain Training

The term brain training now covers a wide array of systems, apps, games, and programs. So what is brain training? At LearningRx we define brain training as a targetted approach that strengthens the brain’s core thinking skills. These include skills like memory, attention span, and how quickly you think. Brain training can also build fundamental skills used for activities like reading, writing, and math.

Key Ingredients for Effective Brain Training

LearningRx has invested nearly four decades into research surrounding learning. Our programs have been developed through research and trial and error and over the years, we discovered seven key ingredients that make brain training effective. They include:

1. Brain training must be practiced.

Because brain training builds skills, it can’t be taught in the classroom. It must be practiced, like learning to play tennis or the piano.

2. Brain training that gets the best results is done one-on-one with a personal trainer.

Teaming with an experienced trainer provides accountability, motivation, and life-changing results.

3. Brain training exercises need to be intense.

We’ve found that concentrated repetitions train skills quickly.

4. Brain training exercises need to be targeted.

Targeted programs are designed to address specific weak cognitive skills.

5. Brain training exercises need to be sequenced.

Small challenging steps don’t overwhelm the client and allow the trainer to continually challenge the client incrementally and keep them engaged.

6. Brain training exercises must be progressively loaded.

Loading incorporates multitasking and is a fast-track way to take a new skill and make it more automatic.

7. Brain training requires immediate, accurate feedback.

Instant, effective reinforcement, and adjustments keep training focused and intense.

How LearningRx Personal Brain Training Works

LearningRx starts every initial consultation with a discussion to learn more about your child’s current learning background.

Next, we’ll schedule a Brain Skills Assessment to determine which cognitive skills—which include auditory and visual processing, memory, logic & reasoning, processing speed, and attention—are strong and which need to be worked on.

We’ll go over the results of the Brain Skills Assessment with you and if you choose to proceed with a LearningRx program, our team will build a custom brain training plan that targets the cognitive skills with the most room for growth.

This plan will serve as a roadmap to stronger learning and thinking skills by allowing the brain trainer to address the root cause of learning difficulties. With our one-on-one approach, every learner gets the attention, feedback, and encouragement they need during training. Each session incorporates a particular training outline for students’ cognitive drills, and mental exercises to target specific skills.

The average brain training program is about 24 weeks, with a few training sessions each week. This schedule allows students to build skills in a relatively short period of time through regular practice and increasingly challenging tasks.

Getting Started with Brain Training

There are two steps you can take to start your journey toward stronger cognitive skills.

First, take our free online brain quiz to get early answers about how your mind (or your student’s mind) works.

Next, contact your nearest LearningRx center to schedule an initial Brain Skills Assessment. The results will offer answers about why you (or your child) perform so well on certain activities yet struggles with other types of tasks or assignments.

You have nothing to lose and a better brain to gain!
