ADD/ADHD Help Beyond Medication

When you’re dealing with an ADHD diagnosis for you or your learner, it can be validating but nerve-wracking. You may have more questions than answers. Most importantly: how do you find the right ADD help for you or your learner?

ADHD (also known as ADD) can come with enormous reserves of imagination, curiosity, and energy. But by now, you know it has challenges, too.

There’s good news! Symptoms can be managed with proper treatment. Diagnosis is almost always the first step. But for most people, that’s just the beginning.

Many specialists recommend a “multimodal approach” to treatment. In other words, it means building a toolkit of strategies to manage symptoms and challenges. If one tool doesn’t do the trick, another one might. Medication can be one of those tools, but it’s rarely the only one.

So, what strategies will provide ADHD help? When exploring your options for support, we always recommend speaking to your doctors or specialists to see what makes sense for you.

With that crucial caveat in mind, let’s review how to take a comprehensive approach to treatment.

Understanding Your Options for ADD/ADHD Help

An Integrated Approach to ADD Help

When it comes to ADD help, it’s important to understand that everyone’s experience looks different. That means the right strategies for treatment can vary, too.

Here are a few options to consider for you or your learner:

  • Understanding ADHD.
You may be surprised at all the different ways that ADD plays a role in daily life. That’s why it’s so essential to brush up on the ins and outs of this condition. Consider picking up a book by a specialist. It may also help to find local classes and support.
  • Medication.
When trying to manage ADHD, medication is a frequent topic of conversation. For many people, the right type and dosage can make a significant impact. This is one place where you’ll want to consult with your doctors to see what’s right for your situation.
  • Therapy.
For kids, teens, and adults, therapy can be enormously helpful for combatting low self-esteem, negative self-talk, and the anxieties that come with this disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy is often recommended. Once again, this is an area where speaking to doctors and specialists will be key.
  • Addressing lifestyle factors.
Growing research shows that proper sleep, good nutrition, and regular exercise can all factor into managing some symptoms of this disorder. Try to implement lifestyle changes to see if they’re useful. For some individuals, certain things, like poor sleep, may play an outsized role, but that’s not true for everyone.

ADD Help with One-on-One Brain Training

Finding the right ADD/ADHD help can be a trial-and-error process. It helps to try new things and see what works for you or your learner. Don’t be disheartened if one strategy doesn’t work—it just means you’re getting that much closer to finding the right approach!

Another option to consider is dedicated brain training. At LearningRx, we help students target and hone their cognitive skills, including working memory and focus—skills that are affected by ADHD. Our brain training is never intended as a cure. Instead, it’s meant to provide support for those who need it.

Here’s why you may want to consider brain training:

  • A sense of structure.
For those with ADHD, routines and structure can be a great way to keep on-track. Through regular, structured sessions throughout the week, we build that structure for our learners.
  • Direct feedback and support.
Having feedback and encouragement can be enormously motivating for anyone—but especially for learners who need ADD help. Our students get that kind of regular input from their dedicated brain trainer!
  • Gamification.
Taking a “gamified” approach to learning is a great way to get ADD learners engaged. Through drills, games, and exercises, we make it challenging and exciting for learners to progress through brain training.
