From Frustrated to Focused: How LearningRx Changed Life for a Student with ADHD

In celebrating our 17-year anniversary, Kilian is one of our initial students whose life was transformed by LearningRx. Check out his story:

Kilian’s Struggles with ADHD

Kilian was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. He was often getting into trouble and struggled to focus. He was up and out of his chair in the classroom all day.

As he entered junior high, Kilian would forget to turn in his homework or forget to do it altogether. He was frustrated and his mom was very concerned as he was getting very poor grades.  His mom had tried tutoring, counseling and ADHD medication, but nothing was helping.

When Kilian was a high school freshman, she was not sure he’d be able to complete high school given his struggles. His ADHD issues were also manifesting as difficulties with executive function

Kilian’s LearningRx Experience

Kilian’s LearningRx training transformed him to where he finished high school with honors and is now a college graduate with a degree in architecture.  He and his mom are thrilled with his turnaround – especially after trying so many ADHD strategies that did not help.

How LearningRx Helps Those with ADHD

Why was LearningRx able to help Kilian’s struggles with ADHD where other strategies did not? Because our training addresses the root cause. When students struggle with attention (or ADHD), the attention issues are usually a symptom of other weaknesses like processing speed and working memory. As detailed in peer-reviewed research published in the Journal of Mental Health and Clinical Psychology, skills including processing speed and working memory are typically lower that attention skills.  This is important to understand is it indicates that often attention issues are a symptom of these weaknesses vs. the main issue.  Unless these weaknesses are addressed, individuals often continue to struggle. For example, processing speed is a common weakness for those diagnosed with ADHD.  Slow processing requires the ADHD brain to work harder to “process” and this high level of effort (or attention) is difficult to maintain.  The result is poor sustained attention.
