One-on-one cognitive training at LearningRx

Is LearningRx Backed by Science? A Deep Dive Into LearningRx Peer-Reviewed Research

When seeking a learning intervention to help you or your loved one improve performance in areas including reading (dyslexia), attention (ADHD), and executive function, or if you are seeking help for an adult hoping to improve quality of life as they age or who may be a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivor, it is critical to understand the research behind the intervention.  Does it actually make a difference?  Is there actual peer-reviewed research and what are the findings?

LearningRx is part of the brain training industry.  There have been high-level studies regarding brain training in general, but what does the research say specifically about the LearningRx methodology?  Most providers who claim to do brain training are mainly providing on-line brain games or apps.

LearningRx Brain Training vs. Other Brain Training Methods

LearningRx training is in a different category, as our training is 1-on-1 and individualized to each client.   We’ve identified several keys to effective brain training:

  • Customized Training Plans – At LearningRx Savage, every learner receives a custom training plan that is tailored to the client’s individual needs and goals.
  • One-on-One – For brain training to work, learners need direction and motivation from a dedicated brain trainer. Our trainers work one-on-one with clients, so that each client gets the attention they need during training.
  • Concentration & Intensity Brain training should be challenging, but not overwhelming. At LearningRx, each training session is custom designed as a true mental workout, with exercises matched to the learner’s existing skill level.
  • Positive Reinforcement – Brain training can be fun, but it’s not always easy. Our brain trainers offer immediate feedback and encouragement during training sessions, helping learners stay energized, motivated, and confident!

LearningRx’s Peer-Reviewed Research

LearningRx has over a decade of research supporting the efficacy of our programs. We have more than 25 published articles and presentations. To date, peer-reviewed LearningRx research includes:

  • 4 peer-reviewed studies demonstrating significant cognitive gains for school aged students.
  • 2 peer-reviewed studies related to our work with clients with ADHD
  • 3 peer-reviewed studies showing our work with clients over 50 years old/seniors
  • A peer-reviewed study demonstrating significant gains in reading and decoding skills

These peer-reviewed studies focus on demonstrating the structural changes in the brain, cognitive skills improvements and transfer effects in areas like reading, attention skills, memory skills and work performance.

Research Findings Summary:

LearningRx has a vast array of findings and below are a few highlights from the research:

  • The ADHD studies demonstrated significant gains in cognitive skill levels as well as improvements in confidence, self-disciple and cooperative behaviors.
  • A study focusing on LearningRx’s reading intervention found:
    • The average gain across five reading skills was 4.1 years in just 24 weeks.
    • The average gain in phonological awareness was nearly 6 years in just 24 weeks.
    • The average gain in phonetic coding was 5.5 years in just 24 weeks.
    • The average gain in spelling was 2.2 years in just 24 weeks.
    • The average gain in Word Attack was 2.9 years in just 24 weeks.
  • In a research study, parents reported reductions in oppositional behavior in students after LearningRx training.
  • In a research study on adults over age 50, real-life improvements included improved attention and memory, confidence, overall mood and outlook and work performance.
  • For TBI survivors, a research study found improvements in memory, attention, confidence and perseverance after brain training at LearningRx. These clients also reported better ability to return to work and a higher frustration tolerance.

This array of LearningRx peer-reviewed research coupled with the thousands of data points provides a convergence of evidence that supports LearningRx training efficacy.
