Fun Games to Build Logic & Critical Thinking Skills

Looking for ways to help your kids become better problem-solvers and critical thinkers? Games that target logic and reasoning skills are a fun, low-pressure way to exercise the brain and build confidence in this area. Weak logic skills are a common root cause of struggles with skills like reading, writing, math, and comprehension, as well as having far-reaching implications for many other areas of life.

Here are a few fun games to build logic and critical thinking skills in individuals of all ages:

Set (Ages 6+)

A set is based on shape, color, number, and shading of each card, and each characteristic has to be all the same or all different. It’s a mental challenge for all ages that is great for building reasoning skills as well as processing speed, attention, working memory, and visual processing!

Spy Alley (Ages 8+)

In this game, you are assigned a “secret identity” and it’s your job to uncover the spy by following clues and reasoning your way through the game. It’s sort of like Clue, but has a different twist that’ll keep the whole family engaged.

Qwirkle (Ages 6+)

This is a great game for logic skills as well as attention and visual processing. Individuals work to lay down tiles that match by either shape or color to score the most points.

Blokus (Ages 7+)

Blokus is a fun game that combines skills like logic, visual processing, attention, and strategy for kids and adults.

Mastermind (Ages 8+)

This quick and easy-to-learn strategy game stretches your logic and problem-solving skills, whether you’re 8 or 98.

Fuzzy Logic (Ages 10+)

This game requires you to create clues to help your teammates guess a word while throwing off the other team. It’ll build the ability to reason through a problem, see potential solutions, and think outside the box.

Guess in 10 (Ages 6+)

This guessing game is perfect for younger kids to help build reasoning skills through guessing animals, jobs, sports, dinosaurs, and more!

Dr. Eureka (Ages 8+)

This is a great visual brain teaser + logic game that makes players think several steps ahead to try to match a visual formula clue. It also builds processing speed and attention along the way!

A Targeted Approach to Building Logic Skills

Strong logic is a critical foundation for being able to reason through problems, think outside the box, foresee different outcomes, and recognize patterns. These are critical skills for many areas of life, so if your child struggles in this area, it’s an important place to spend some time and effort.

While games are a great way to practice these skills, targeted intervention is critical to create significant and lasting change in the brain. Logic and critical thinking skills are abilities that can be targeted and trained to help unlock this area of learning, no matter your age!
