Every individual with autism has a varied cognitive profile and experiences the world differently. Some may excel in creativity, problem-solving, memory, or attention to detail, while also facing challenges in communication, academics, focus, or social interaction. Because autism exists on a spectrum, each person’s strengths and struggles are unique.
At LearningRx in Eagan, we focus on strengthening the cognitive skills that support learning, thinking, and daily functioning.
Understanding the Brain and Autism
Research suggests that autism is connected to differences in how the brain develops and communicates. A study published in the journal Neuron found that some individuals with autism may have unusually high numbers of brain connections, known as synapses. In neurotypical development, the brain naturally “prunes” unused connections over time. When this process occurs differently, it can contribute to characteristics commonly associated with ASD.
These may include:
- Delays in language or motor development
- Difficulties with attention, focus, or impulse control
- Academic struggles
- Emotional sensitivity or reactivity
- Differences in sleep or eating patterns
Brain training is designed to strengthen and improve the efficiency of cognitive skills and neural pathways in the brain. By targeting foundational thinking skills, we can help individuals build the skills that support learning and daily functioning
A Personalized Approach to Brain Training
No two individuals with autism learn the same way. That’s why individualized training is at the center of our approach.
Each LearningRx training plan is individualized based on the learner’s strengths, difficulties, and goals. This allows us to embrace neurodiversity while helping each client grow in the areas that matter most to them and their families.
Areas Where Brain Training Has Helped
Supported Academic Growth
Strong cognitive skills are essential for learning in any environment—whether a student is in a traditional classroom, homeschool setting, or specialized educational program.
Research and client outcomes have shown encouraging results for individuals with autism who completed brain training. Between 2010 and 2018, children and teens with autism who participated in LearningRx programs improved cognitive and learning skills by an average of 3.2 years. Adults on the spectrum also demonstrated gains across multiple thinking skills.
Improved Reading and Comprehension
Reading ability varies widely among individuals with autism. Some become advanced readers early, while others struggle with decoding, fluency, or comprehension.
Our structured literacy reading program uses a sound-to-code approach that helps learners build strong reading foundations step by step.
Built Social and Communication Skills
One-on-one training creates opportunities for meaningful interaction and relationship-building between the student and trainer. After completing a program, our families have reported improvements in things like:
- Maintaining eye contact
- Engaging in conversation
- Interpreting social cues
- Expressing thoughts more clearly
Past clients on the spectrum have also reported improvements in language processing, communication, and overall confidence during social interactions.
Looking Beyond Traditional Support
Many families affected by autism spend years navigating therapies, accommodations, and educational supports. While these services are important, they often focus on adapting to challenges or accommodating rather than strengthening the underlying cognitive skills involved in learning and processing.
That’s where LearningRx brain training offers a different approach.
By targeting foundational cognitive skills including memory, processing speed, reasoning, visual and auditory processing, we aim to help individuals become more efficient learners, communicators, and problem-solvers while complementing existing support systems and therapies.
Local Support for Families
The LearningRx Eagan location is also approved for county waivers, including CADI waivers and Developmental Delay (DD) waivers, helping make services more accessible for qualifying families.
LearningRx does not diagnose, treat, or cure autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, many individuals on the spectrum have experienced meaningful improvements through brain training. The outcomes presented in this article are based on studies and surveys of past clients; every brain is unique so you or your loved ones may or may not achieve the same outcomes.
