What Signs of Academic Progress Should You Be Seeing Midway Through the School Year?

Now that we are deeper into the school year, it’s a good time to assess your child’s progress. But what should you be looking for?

Academic Markers

There are the obvious clues related to how your child is performing academically.  Factors like – are they at grade level in reading fluency, reading comprehension, and math.  Are their grades acceptable?

These are traditional markers, but do they tell the entire story?

Signs of Academic Progress That Go Deeper

I’d encourage you to look deeper than the traditional factors related to reading and math.

For example:

  • Does your child like school – do they seem to have a love for learning?  This can be an indicator as to if your child will be a life-long learner.
  • Are they participating in class or more withdrawn?
  • Are they confident in their abilities?  Do they have a can-do attitude?
  • How is homework time going?  Lots of procrastination and frustration?
  • Do they have missing or late assignments?   Do they seem on top of their work or is there often last-minute drama?
  • How do they persevere through difficult tasks?  Do they give up or always need help?

And a big one – is your child independent?

Why These Matter

If your child struggles in any of these areas, it can be a sign of even greater struggles down the road and often an underlying issue. Ultimately, these all point to a love for learning, a confident learner and a capable learner.

If your child is struggling in any of these areas, it is critical to identify the root cause.  Often these struggles relate to cognitive skill weaknesses that are making academic tasks more difficult and impacting their love for learning, confidence and independence.

An ideal next step is to schedule an assessment at LearningRx Eagan.  The assessment is currently only $99 and will provide a wealth of information as to why your child is experiencing difficulties.
