LearningRx and ADHD

As you seek ADHD help, it’s important to make sure the intervention you choose is backed by strong research and evidence.

An ADHD diagnosis is the most common diagnosis we work with at LearningRx Eagan.  In fact, it’s the reason our owners, Rich and Adele, opened the center almost 18 years ago.  Their youngest daughter, Catie, was diagnosed with ADHD, receptive and expressive language delays and sensory integration disorder.  Staying on task, reading and overall learning was very difficult for Catie.  They tried the recommended approach of ADHD medication and an IEP, but Catie had bad reactions to the medications and Rich and Adele realized that her IEP was not a good long-term strategy as IEPs do not follow students into adulthood!  Since Catie’s LearningRx training years ago, she has been off her medication for ADHD, has a college degree and is thriving.

This was also the case for Connor.  Connor came to us in junior high due to his struggles with ADHD.  Connor was very bright but his processing speed was only in the 5th percentile compared to others his age.  This weakness was the root cause of his attention issues as his brain had to work so hard that he could not sustain his attention.  Completing homework was an incredibly difficult task for Connor and these weaknesses also manifested as struggles with executive function.  Connor’s processing speed jumped significantly due to his LearningRx training and he is now, years later, a college graduate.  Connor says he looks at his life as “life before LearningRx” and “life after LearningRx” and how much easier school became once the root cause of his attention issues was addressed.  Connor’s story is below.

To date, we have two peer-reviewed research studies published in psychology and medical journals.  One of these studies, published in the Journal of Mental Health and Clinical Psychology, demonstrated that for those diagnosed with ADHD, attention is not typically their lowest cognitive skill.  Skills like processing speed and memory or often weaker skills.

These weaker skills are often the root cause of attention issues as was the case for Connor and many others we have helped who struggle with attention and focus.

This research tells us that interventions for ADHD need to target more than attention, because memory skills and processing speed are also deficient skills for those with ADHD.

Additional research published in the journal Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment related to our work with clients with ADHD showed an average IQ increase of over 20 points. All LearningRx research participants obtained clinically significant changes indicating overall recovery and saw improvements in cooperative behavior, confidence and self-discipline.

The actual results in our work with clients with ADHD resulted in an average gain of 3.5 years across the core cognitive skills – a significant jump in abilities!

If you have a loved one diagnosed with ADHD or struggling with attention issues, call LearningRx Eagan to better understand the root cause and learn more.
