AJ’s Reading Difficulties
AJ did generally did very well in school – she was on task and engaged. However, anything that had to do with reading was a different story. She was frustrated, overwhelmed and really struggled to read.
Reading Help
AJ’s father is a teacher and they tried many options before LearningRx. They worked hard to help her at home, which did not help, and it also became clear that tutoring was not the ideal strategy. They enrolled AJ at LearningRx Woodbury because they wanted to figure why, after all their efforts, she continued to struggle with reading in junior high.
The LearningRx Approach to Reading Help
LearningRx training is different than tutoring in that our focus is addressing the root cause. For AJ – and most students who struggle with reading – this was related to her weaknesses in memory, processing speed and auditory processing. These skills enable effective word recognition, reading fluency, decoding and reading comprehension.
Strategies like reading tutoring can help, but do not address these core cognitive weaknesses. It is important to ensure that any reading instruction is based on the Science of Reading methodology. This is critical because a structured literacy approach to reading instruction is aligned with what we know about how the brain learns to read. Structured literacy programs include explicit, systematic teaching that focuses on phonological awareness, word recognition, phonics and decoding, spelling, and syntax at the sentence and paragraph levels.
ReadRx training at LearningRx Woodbury has always matched these guidelines with a one-on-one, multi-sensory, structured literacy program delivered through a brain training approach. What sets LearningRx Woodbury apart from all other structured literacy and reading interventions is our focus on building strong cognitive skills first because they are the foundation for all learning.
