For students diagnosed with dyslexia or dysgraphia, academics can be challenging.
Solene was diagnosed with both. Her diagnosis manifested as weaknesses in working memory, auditory processing and phonological processing.
How Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Manifest Cognitively
Solene’s working memory weakness caused issues with decoding and recognizing words. Memory is critical for retaining sight words and all the strange exceptions in our language. As words get longer and multi-syllable, low working memory creates difficulty retaining sounds while a student is in the process of blending and decoding. Poor working memory is also often present for students with a dysgraphia diagnosis making it more difficult for them to hold and organize their thoughts.
Phonological weaknesses are common for those with dyslexia, making blending and sounding out words a struggle.
IEPs and Reading Interventions
Solene was getting extra help with tutoring and had an IEP, but these strategies were not moving the needle, and she was falling further behind. This is common as IEPs provide accommodations for those with these difficulties but are not typically directly addressing the root cause. So as expectations increase year-over-year, students can fall further behind.
Reading tutoring can be helpful but is also missing the root cause of reading and reading fluency difficulties like memory and processing speed skills.
Solene’s LearningRx Results
Solene’s LearningRx Woodbury training addressed these weaknesses. Her mom, Stefanie, shared, “Before starting at LearningRx, my daughter struggled a lot and she hated school, especially math. After being diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia last summer, we were searching for something that could truly help her. Since beginning her program at LearningRx, we’ve seen a major transformation in her confidence and her overall mood have improved so much! Even her teacher has noticed a positive difference. Choosing LearningRx was one of the best decisions we’ve made for her, and we’re so grateful for the impact it’s had on her growth and happiness.”
If your child is diagnosed with either dyslexia or dysgraphia, or if you suspect they could be, call LearningRx in Savage to get answers. The first step is an initial assessment that is currently $100 off the standard price (only $99!) and takes about one hour. This cognitive skills assessment will determine the root cause as to why your child is struggling. More importantly, it will provide clarity as to how to improve and strengthen skills to make learning and life easier.
Results are from past clients. LearningRx does not diagnose or treat learning disabilities, but we have worked with thousands of individuals who came to us with a diagnosis like ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. You or your loved ones may or may not achieve the same outcomes, but you can learn more about our research and results here.
