Rebecca’s Reading Difficulties

The Root Cause of Rebecca’s Reading Difficulties
Rebecca’s initial assessment confirmed her reading struggles, but it went deeper to identify why. Rebecca had weaknesses in memory, which is a critical reading skill. Her parents realized they were also seeing memory issues show up in other areas like her reading comprehension and general ability to retain information for math and other subjects.
Skills like phonemic awareness and auditory processing are critical for reading. However, weaknesses in memory are often overlooked as it relates to reading skill. Given roughly 60% of our language consists of non-phonetic words like “said” and “laugh”, strong memory is necessary to retain all the strange English rules and spelling inconsistencies. It is also common, if working or auditory memory are low, that students lose their place while blending longer, multi-syllable words.
All the strategies they tried were more focused on the symptom of Rebecca’s reading struggles and did not address the root cause.
