If you have a young one struggling to read, as you consider reading help, there is important data to consider – some of it good and some not so good.
The Bad News Regarding Reading Progress
First for the concerning news about reading progress. A recent study showed that of kindergarteners who started the year off track in reading, only 49% were on track by the end of their third-grade year (a coin toss). Among first graders who started the school year off track in reading, just 29% ended third grade on track. Among second graders who started the school year off track, 18% ended third grade on track by the end of the year. And among third graders who started the school year off track, only 5% were on track in reading by the end of the school year.
As a parent who wants to ensure their child is caught up and reading at grade level in that critical 3rd grade year, these statistics would indicate early intervention is critical but that traditional reading intervention strategies and reading tutoring methods do not seem to be making a significant positive impact on students’ reading abilities.
The Good News Regarding Reading Progress
However, there is good news! The root cause of poor reading skills – be it reading fluency and/or reading comprehension – can be identified and addressed to help students thrive in reading and keep your child from being a negative statistic.
Recent peer-reviewed research published in the journal Psychology Research and Behavior Management demonstrated significant reading improvements for students who completed a ReadRx program at LearningRx. These results were attained in just 24 weeks of ReadRx training:
- In a research study with more than 3,500 struggling readers, researchers found statistically significant changes in both reading skills and cognitive skills after 24 weeks of training with ReadRx.
- The average gain across five reading skills was 4.1 years in just 24 weeks.
- The average gain in phonological awareness was nearly 6 years in just 24 weeks.
- The average gain in phonetic coding was 5.5 years in just 24 weeks.
- The average gain in spelling was 2.2 years in just 24 weeks.
- The average gain in Word Attack was 2.9 years in just 24 weeks.
- The average gain in IQ score was nearly 14 points.
- Parents reported improvements in cognition, academic performance, and psychosocial skills.
These gains are significant and have been realized by thousands of clients who have enrolled at LearningRx.
Elle’s LearningRx Reading Success
This was true of Elle, whose parents had tried numerous reading interventions to help their daughter read fluently. However, these strategies – school reading help and outside reading tutoring – did not help her. The reason most students continue to struggle after third grade is due to cognitive skills weaknesses typical reading help strategies do not address. These weaknesses can include auditory processing, phonological awareness, visual processing and memory. When these skills are weak, students lack the skills to read effectively and usually, unless these weaker skills are identified and strengthened, students will continue to fall behind in reading as the Amplify Research showed.
Due to Elle’s LearningRx training, her reading skills skyrocketed and she has been excelling in reading and her academics ever since.
Ellie’s Story:
Reading is the backbone of education and a critical component enabling a child’s academic success. As students advance, reading bleeds into every subject and has a significant impact on their performance.
Reading Skills Can Be Improved at Any Age
If you are the parents of a child who is struggling to read in their early years, don’t gamble that they will be one of the lucky ones to end up at grade level. Call the LearningRx Eagan center to schedule an assessment. We will be able to tell you if they have the cognitive skills to ultimately catch-on to reading or if they are likely to struggle.
If you have an older child who is struggling to read or if you are as an adult, LearningRx can help reading skills make a significant jump and get past these reading difficulties.
Whether the reading difficulty is a general struggle or a dyslexia diagnosis, LearningRx Eagan reading training can identify the root cause and train these weak skills to unlock reading ability.
Results are from past clients. You or your loved ones may or may not achieve the same outcomes, but you can learn more about our research and results here.
