Questions to Ask in Parent-Teacher Conferences to Identify Learning Struggles

We are now deeper into the school year, and parent-teacher conferences are on the horizon.  It’s an opportunity to zero in on any learning struggles your child may be experiencing.  Below are some recommended questions to help you get the most out of your session.

  • How is my child performing academically compared to grade-level expectations?  This helps you gauge if there are any specific areas where your child might be falling behind.
  • Can you provide examples of my child’s strengths and weaknesses in different subjects?  This allows you to understand both their strong areas and those needing improvement.
  • Are there any specific skills or concepts my child is struggling with?  This helps Identify precise areas where additional support might be needed.
  • Does my child seem to grasp the concepts taught in class, or do they often need further explanation?  This provides  insight into how well your child understands and retains information.
  • How does my child handle assignments and homework? Are they completing them on time and to a satisfactory level?  This will help you understand their organizational and time-management skills
  • Does my child show signs of frustration or anxiety about their schoolwork?  This identifies if emotional factors might be impacting their learning.
