Summer Reading Is So Important

Why Is Summer Reading So Important?
Summer reading is so important. It’s a great time to continue to grow your child’s skills and abilities.
It is important to keep your child mentally active over the summer, especially in reading as you want to avoid the “summer slide”.  The “summer slide” is the dynamic where the average student loses roughly 30% of their reading skills over the summer if they do not work to maintain it.
Below are reasons a reading strategy can help helpful.

Provides Structure

A summer reading program will provide some structure to your summer activities. It’s common to lost structure during the summer and a reading program can help maintain this.  Choose a specific time of day and specific place to read so it becomes routine.  Make sure to be consistent.

Reading Builds Skills

Reading is so helpful because it can help build other skills. Reading can improve skills including vocabulary with exposure to new words. Reading can also build attention skills and other cognitive skills.

Strengthens Writing Skills

You can take your summer reading to another level by having your child write about what they are reading. This will strengthen their writing skills, ability to summarize information and reading comprehension.

Shows Reading Can Be Fun

Lastly, one goal is to make reading fun! Now that school is out, let your child choose what to read. Choose topics they are interested in.  Foster a love for reading which can evolve into a love for learning.
