This Could be the Reason Your Child Struggles with Reading or Math.

A Summer of Confidence with Brain Training

Rosa struggled with reading and math from a young age.  Her parents and teachers worked with Rosa but they were not seeing improvement.  Rosa disliked reading and homework time was frustrating because the work was so hard for her. By why did she struggle so much?   Rosa’s parents decided to seek help from LearningRx and she completed an initial assessment. The results uncovered that Rosa’s long-term and processing speed were not at her age level.

Long-term memory is a critical skill for reading fluency.  It starts with learning the letters and sounds associated with each letter.  Then sight words become a struggle and word recognition is difficult especially since roughly 60% of our language consists of non-phonetic words like “said” and “laugh”. Doing more reading can help, but these types of interventions do not address the root cause (memory weaknesses).

Long-term memory is also critical to math success in retaining math facts and formulas. For example, If a child is struggling to retain multiplication tables the common strategy is to drill the math facts over-and-over. Your child may eventually memorize them, but the next academic task that requires memory will start to cause issues (like test taking). The key is to address the root cause.

Low processing speed meant Rosa was slower in her ability to access her memory when reading or doing math.  She also struggled to absorb information in the classroom and had attention issues because her brain had to work so hard to keep up. This makes it very difficult to sustain attention.

Rosa completed her LearningRx training when she was in 3rd grade, and it was life changing.  Now, years later, she has been enjoying academic success and has her sights set on college!
