Can a Student Go From Hating School to Loving School?

Nathan's Journey to Greater Confidence & Motivation (2023 LearningRx Student of the Year Runner Up)

Fabian and Mary Kay sought out LearningRx when their son, Nathan, was going into 8th grade.

Nathan had consistently struggled in school. He had difficulties with reading, writing and attention. His parents biggest concern was that he was frustrated and hated school.  Given he was approaching high school, they were desperate to see improvement.  He lacked confidence often saying, “I can’t do it” during homework and completing homework was often a battle.

They had tried outside tutoring and from 3rd – 6th grade he was being pulled out for extra reading help. They were seeing very little progress.  Why?  Because most interventions, including tutoring, are not addressing the root cause as to why a student is struggling.  If the root cause is not addressed, as expectations increase year-to-year, kids get stuck in a constant cycle of academic catch-up.  This had been Nathan’s experience.

Nathan’s LearningRx training was a great experience and life-changing!  His parents started to hear Nathan say he liked school. Teachers shared that he had a better attitude. Overall, his ability to read, write and pay attention improved. Along with this, Nathan’s self-confidence changed, and homework was now much easier.

Nathan is the 2nd of 8 children and one of the more satisfying moments came when Nathan started reading books to his younger siblings – something he would never do before!

The reason LearningRx training works is that LearningRx identifies and addresses the root cause of learning struggle. For Nathan, this was weaknesses in working memory, reasoning, and auditory processing. These lower skills manifested in difficulties with reading, comprehension and attention.

Most students want to do well in school, but when they do not have the skills to perform at the expected levels, it is common for motivation and negative attitudes to develop.  The key to helping a child go from hating to loving school?  Make school easier by giving them the core skills they need to be successful.  When this happens, confidence increases along with self-esteem and the ability to persevere through difficult tasks.

If your child is struggling in school and you are seeing difficulties with reading, comprehension, attention issues (ADHD), math, executive function, motivation or homework frustration, there is a reason and a root cause that can be addressed.
