This Enthusiastic Young Man has Something Surprising to Say About Learning

Meet Jacob. He’s a wicked-smart, super-driven 13-year-old boy who also happens to have autism. When he was in elementary school, his parents were told he’d never talk, learn, or even tie his shoes. Boy, did he prove them wrong! While he was failing to thrive in traditional school, the boy who couldn’t pass finger-painting began teaching himself advanced physics theories out of text books. At age 10, he taught himself algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and undergraduate calculus – in two weeks! Today he’s in the process of publishing a paper about an original theory he developed to solve a daunting problem in astrophysics. According to Jacob, great things can happen when we stop “learning” and start “thinking,” and to make his point, he describes remarkable discoveries that were made in his own life (and in the lives of others) when traditional “learning” stopped being an option. We think you’ll find Jacob as funny, endearing, and smart as we do! April is Autism Awareness month, and we can’t think of a better kid to help educate people about the many faces of autism. We dare you not to fall in love with him in this video.
