September 21 is World Alzheimer’s Day

Although everyone has heard of Alzheimer’s, not everyone knows what it is exactly, or how common it is. Here are some general facts to get you up to speed:

1. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia (disorders that impair mental functioning).

2. Every 65 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s.

3. Currently, 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s.

4. Experts predict that by the year 2050, the number of Americans living with the disease will reach as many as 14 million people.

5. Alzheimer’s is the 6th-leading cause of death in the U.S, but it’s the only one in the top 10 that can’t be prevented or cured.

6. Only 16% of seniors says they receive regular cognitive assessments.
