Homework Hacks

Now that school is back and session, homework is back on the table (or desk). We’ve gathered some of our favorite homework hacks to help expedite the process, keep your student organized, and decrease the chances for tantrums (yours or your kids).

1. Listen to classic music.

Studies have shown that students who listen to classical music score higher on tests than those who listen to other genres.

2. Take a 5-minute break for every 25 minutes.

Working for hours at a time can actually slow kids down. Encourage them to set a time for 25 minutes, then take a five-minute break to stretch and walk around.

3. Stay hydrated and give your brain fuel.

Dehydration can prevent your student’s brain from functioning at peak performance. Keep them hydrated with water or decaf tea. Offer non-sugary snacks that provide a mix of protein and carbs to fuel their brain.

4. Keep supplies well stocked.

Few things break up the flow of homework than needed to run downstairs for the calculator or to the car for a math book. Ensure your student has everything they need within reach before they get started.

5. Break large tasks down into smaller goals.

Does your student have a paper due in 10 days? Come up with some smaller tasks that move the project forward without overwhelming them. Night 1 might include creating an outline. Night 2 may be research and notes. Night 3 might be writing the intro and bullet points. Night 4 may include creating support materials, such as charts and graphs.
