LearningRx Reviews the Benefits of Cognitive Baselines

For Young Athletes

July 1, 2018—(Colorado Springs, Colo.)—July is Youth Sports Month and one-on-one brain training company LearningRx (www.LearningRx.com) is recommending that parents take young athletes in for a brain skills assessment to create their own cognitive skills baseline.

“A cognitive skills baseline will provide a measurement of the core brain skills we use to think, learn, remember and read,” explains LearningRx Chief Research & Development Officer Tanya Mitchell. “These include visual and auditory processing, memory, processing speed, attention and logic & reasoning. If an athlete later receives a concussion, we can once again measure their brain skills to see if any have been weakened by the injury.”

According to Mitchell, many parents incorrectly believe that the best predictor of post-injury severity and neurocognitive deficits is loss of consciousness. In reality, on-the-field amnesia is the most predictive symptom, and loss of consciousness occurs in fewer than 10% of concussions. Parents should watch for the following general concussion symptoms:

  • headache
  • confusion or mood/behavior changes
  • lightheadedness or dizziness
  • blurred vision or tired eyes
  • memory loss
  • ringing in the ears
  • bad taste in the mouth
  • numbness or poor coordination in limbs
  • fatigue or lethargy
  • changes in sleep patterns
  • trouble with concentration, attention or thinking
