LearningRx – Brain Training – One-on-One Brain Training Company Reviews Tips to Improve Children’s Reading Comprehension

April 9-15, 2017 is National Library Week and one-on-one brain training company LearningRx (www.LearningRx.com) is sharing tips with parents to improve their children’s reading comprehension at home.

STEP 1: Choose age-appropriate material.

Choose a book that is age appropriate, of interest to the child, and new to them (so you can rule out the idea that they just have the book memorized).

STEP 2: Set expectations.

Ask the child to be looking for answers to three questions as they read. You can generate the questions or have the child come up with them as soon as they decide on a book. If the story is new to the child, you can have him predict what will happen based on the title.

STEP 3: Check for understanding.

Have the child stop reading every few pages and ask them if they understood what they’ve just read. If they don’t, let them go back and reread the text for better comprehension.

STEP 4: Summarize what was read.

Ask them to summarize a few pages at a time.

For a more dramatic boost in reading comprehension, LearningRx offers ComprehendRx. The groundbreaking program targets seven core skills critical for reading comprehension—visualization, vocabulary, reading fluency, sequential processing, reasoning, metacognitive strategies, and working memory—to work on understanding, retention, and application.
