Teaching Reading Strategies
Teaching Reading Strategies: A Fine Balance
When teaching reading strategies, it’s important to realize that the main goal is to teach others to read efficiently. In order to read efficiently it’s necessary to read intelligently. A balance between maximum benefit and minimum effort is key. It can be difficult to teach reading strategies because every student is at a different reading level. We’ll look at 4 different approaches for teaching strategies that any teacher or parent can incorporate.
Teaching Reading Strategies: What Works
Note, teaching reading strategies while not bringing it to the forefront of the lesson can be helpful.
- Shared Reading: Have the students read aloud with you as you all go through the text. It allows students to participate actively with support from others.
- Guided Reading: Create lessons that extend beyond the story. This type of strategy allows for more independent reading. It will help students have a better understanding of things like story structure, vocabulary, comparisons, and relating to the text.
- Independent Reading: Being an independent reader is important for students since they won’t always have someone helping them out. Have them read by themselves or with a partner as they choose their own story, and have them come up with their own reading strategies or other strategies they’ve recently learned.
- Reading Aloud: Reading aloud works the brain a lot more than silent reading. Read aloud to the students by yourself, in order to model how to read. You can also have each student read a section of the text aloud by themselves.
When a student’s reading comprehension breaks down, reading strategies can help, but they won’t get to the root of the problem. Cognitive skills training is designed to train the brain’s mental skills. Skills such as reading comprehension.
