Teaching Learning Styles: Awareness
Teaching learning styles is important for teachers to connect with their children. A classroom is full of students who have a multitude of different learning styles and a multi-style approach to presenting the material can be a helpful way to cater to each student’s best way of learning. It’s not possible to accommodate all learning style preferences all the time, but an awareness of the styles can help improve the methods of presentation.

Teaching Learning Styles: A Teachers Guide
Teaching learning styles by incorporating a variety of active learning strategies can make teaching more rewarding and enhance student learning at the same time. An understanding of the different learning styles is fundamental to the individual approaches of teaching even though all teachers can approach learning styles from different disciplines and experiences. Here are some examples that you can incorporate in the classroom.
  • For a collaborative learner: From an original lecture-oriented course add an opportunity for small group discussion.

  • For an independent learner: Introduce open ended questions to typical close-ended questions.

  • For a dependent learner: Provide directions early on in the semester.
Note: Don’t allow students to rely on only their best style, help them develop the other learning styles they are weak in by easing them into the corresponding type of activity. For example, teachers may provide less and less direction along the semester, enabling dependent learners to become more independent.

Teaching Learning Styles: The Importance of Cognitive Skills
Learning styles won’t be an end-all cure-all that solves all classroom problems. If you know a student who struggles to learn, tell them about LearningRx. We specialize in training students one-on-one to become effective learners by training their cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are like the fundamental gears that allow the different learning styles to turn fast, easy, efficient. Without well oiled cognitive skills, it can become difficult for students to learn, no matter what their learning style.
