Sean's Story

“During my time at LearningRx I have gained more confidence in what I do in my work and day to day life. I honestly thought it was going to suck but then in class when I saw improvement I was in some sort of disbelief. When I first came into the program I was a drugee, failure and a kid with no goals in life now I have goals and a better mindset.

My confidence has been building since and I used to always hit a brick wall and give up and now I jump over the wall, get to the ground and run way past the wall. I can only go higher and higher from here.”

More from Sean's grandparents...

“When our grandson Sean started LearningRx in March 2007, he had been on the path of a long downward descent in motivation and grades for more than a year, starting his freshman year in high school. Despite a contract, tutoring, school meetings, incentives and consequences, nothing worked consistently. Even more troubling was his verbalized belief he did not have the ability to meet our expectations. That threatened to cast consequences into punishment.
We learned of LearningRx through unsolicited direct mail at a time when we were at a loss for what kind of help to provide. The LearningRx messages we read were right on point: laziness, boredom, lack of attention, and poor grades - these might just be the symptoms of underdeveloped learning skills.

Sean was not thrilled with the additional time to be devoted to LearningRx each week, but he did participate fully for the time he was there without griping or grumbling. There was no moment in time turning point, but as we assessed early progress, his talk of an inability to meet expectations was noticeably absent, and after two months in the program just 3 weeks before finals his grades took a turn upward from a C-GPA to a C+ and stayed there.

The achievements in grades were tangible gains, but the more subjective improvements have to do with attitude, responsibility, accountability, and visions of the future, with the support of LearningRx staff, messages on these traits detailed with the LearningRx session and exercises on learning skills. We believe a very important factor in the process was the one-on-one time with a dedicated trainer with whom a close rapport was developed over time.

While Sean just completed follow up assessment testing, we have no doubt he will show substantial gains in learning skills attainment relative to his age. And these are skills he will continue to build on and develop in the normal course of events in school. While we consider Sean’s improvements a work in progress, the present is happier and the future brighter because of LearningRx and its methodologies for more effective learning and its messages of hope.”

Andrew's Story

“Before I started with Learning RX my ability to perform in school was below what was expected of me. I knew deep down that I had the ability to do the work at an acceptable level but I did not know how to do it. Sometimes in school I just felt so confused and could not concentrate. Not being able to concentrate allowed me time to just daydream and my grades fell so low that I knew if my parents and I did not do something quick I would be in trouble.

We discovered Learning RX and their program seemed like it was made for people just like me. Learning RX gives you tools that allow your "genius side" to come out. The exercises they performed with me were easy to understand and the teachers were super! Lots of "training my brain" helped me to perform up to my expectations in school. Today my grades are awesome-A's and B's! (o.k., except for English which I am improving - got a "C"). Learning RX helped to bring the best out of me and I feel confident for my future.

Thanks Learning RX!!!

Andrew

Turn Off the TV - I Want to Read!

Dear Dr. A. and Terri,

“I just had to tell you about our recent vacation. We just returned from 5 days in Phoenix for spring break with the family. Our older daughters were home from college and couldn't wait to lay in the sun and read. Normally this would pose a problem for Jake - being more active and hating to read - he'd be antsy for more active time.

Well - Jake read three - count them three (350 - 400 page) books while we were away. (Anthony Horowitz spy series!) We had to go to the bookstore twice to get him another. We could not tear him away - he even said "turn off the TV - I want to read" one evening. This is totally amazing! Dan and I are thrilled and we know it's the training he is doing with Mike that has made the difference. We are amazed at how quickly the change has begun. Thank you so very much for the program, and we look forward to his continued growth and improvements.”

Sincerely, Lynn

Hunter's Story

“When we started LearningRx we knew it would be a while before we started to see an improvement in Hunter’s grades… But not even 2 months later he has improved so much in his reading, writing, math and his mental ability to remember things. Hunter would get extremely frustrated with his homework when mom or dad were working with him, but now we work great with each other and its so much more exciting to see Hunter enjoy doing homework with mom or dad! Hunter is so excited everyday that he has LearningRx and is disappointed if he has to miss a session. In fact, Hunter will walk into the center, see his trainer and will make a bee line for him, without even saying, “See you later mom!”
I highly recommend this program! It has been nothing but beneficial to our family and we know that our son has a lot less harder road ahead of him academically, LearningRx provides something that Hunter will have with him forever! To us, we are military family with Hunter’s father being deployed right after he started the program so we weren’t sure how the “civilian” world would feel about our situation. But the staff at LearningRx has gone far above our expectations, They’ve made us feel as if we’re part of a family and stability is so important to a family with a deployed parent.”

No Longer Labeled

“Today I heard the most powerful educational statement I have ever heard an educator make: "The kids went into the [LearningRx] program as SPEDS, but when they finished the program they were no longer SPEDS." In all my years of being involved in education, I have always viewed special education as an academic death sentence. I have only met maybe 2 or 3 individuals who successfully were no longer labeled as SPEDS. Obviously God has entrusted to you what perhaps can and will be educational deliverance and healing for countless children who are now languishing under academic hopeless and despair. I keep thinking that I can’t get any more excited about LearningRx and this project, and it seems that every time we are together I am proven wrong. This is one time in my life I rejoice at being wrong. I truly thank our heavenly Father for you and your heart. It refreshes my soul to hear your heart and see your passionate commitment to making a difference in the lives of children. I count it a joy and a privilege to be bonded with you in this mission.”

Get Lip Gloss:

Zuri's Adventure at LearningRx

“Two weeks into my daughter’s cognitive skills training at LearningRx, I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that we’re where we need to be and Zuri is getting the help she needs.

I caught myself helping Zuri by tailoring and implementing a home-based private schooling program for her after leaving her in public school long enough to see that she didn’t seem to be progressing in her basic abilities despite special ed accommodations. I wanted her very abilities to be improved, not only things shifted to ease achievement.

Homeschooling has eliminated her emotional struggles born of competition, wanting to belong and not be left behind, craving for attention, and to “not be pushed through” her work. However, my techniques of teaching through her interests and multifaceted instruction have not struck the root either.

I recently saw a flyer for LearningRx that piqued my interest. A place that can actually train cognitive skills? Hmmm....sounds like they’re talking about striking the root, but what exactly are cognitive skills? After missing a neighborhood LearningRx seminar, I tracked down a nearby site and made an impromptu visit.

Reading the literature after a hearty welcome and digging out Zuri’s IEP file brought several things to light. Number one, all of the testing Zuri did for her third year IEP and for neuropsychological testing did not give the complete cognitive skills picture. The school system never tested her cognitive skills, only achievement. Even if they could, the public school format only lends itself to group-based academic training, not one-on-one cognitive skills training.

Secondly, while neuropsych testing employed a variety of tests and certainly offered great detail, standards such as reading comprehension were not included. Right away, I knew that even if I decided not to partake in the LearningRx program, that its Cognitive Skills Profile would be of great use to confirm and complete the picture. I figured that I could take the profile anywhere to accurately present my daughter to other providers as needed.

Zuri was tested the same week and we met the psychologist/site owner the next day. We were in for a surprise. Most of the results are consistent with what we had seen before yet much more specific – anywhere from approximately 1 to 6 years behind in most skills – but she is at college entry level on one skill and a couple years ahead on another! The testing in itself became a means of celebrating Zuri as well as showing which “brain muscles” we want to strengthen.

Zuri had already decided that she wanted to train at LearningRx, and consulting Dr. A and observing the staff and environment made it clear to me that we were in a special place. Additional proof of the center’s success is literally on the walls – children who have completed the program have hand print cut-outs showing cognitive skill age equivalency improvements with a quote from the child too.

Zuri and I walked away from the consult with a visual to help understand the game plan. When we ran into Zuri’s former public school special day class instructional aide and learned that she now works as a trainer at LearningRx too, there was absolutely no doubt left.

I know that LearningRx might still sound too good to be true, despite testimonials. Even so, let me tell you how the LearningRx program has affected Zuri’s life. First of all, she’s much more confident. She’s confident because she’s seen the proof that she’s very good in some things and each session experience marks an improvement. The personal recap & goals slip she does each session in effect makes her reaffirm her plan for success and she records how the drill worked on each day will be applied in her life. Mindless training, this is not!

Since LearningRx, Zuri is also more on track. Besides working toward her goal to “get lip gloss” using earned Brainy Bucks, she submits to reminders on attending personal medical procedures and takes up the challenge of calculating when she needs to care for herself again. She also does not isolate and lose herself in her “active time.” Instead, she’s staying with everyone else in the house and finds a way to engage and work through her attention struggles.

Zuri was already hugging and thanking me two days into the program for putting her into LearningRx. On her second week now, I see improvement in her life as well as in her training. I have hope for my daughter but, more importantly, Zuri has hope for herself.

My advice? Empower yourself and your child with the Cognitive Skills Profile. Celebrate who your child is and capitalize on the profile by letting LearningRx be part of your child’s journey. You have nothing to lose, especially with the LearningRx guarantee, and your child has so much to gain.”
