Reading tutorial: Understanding
A reading tutorial provides instruction in a particular area. Different than an individual tutor, a reading tutorial can be a class or a book or an online program or a set of individualized sessions of intensive programs. This can be done on a per student basis, or as part of a small number of students in a classroom setting. There might be times when an instructor asks the students to read a paragraph, and from that, determine what is the main idea, topic point and theme, and basically, what the paragraph is about.

Reading tutorial: Reading level
A reading tutorial relies on the skill level of the student. Skill level includes comprehension of the subject matter and reading speed. A reading tutorial includes the use of dictionaries, encyclopedias and the Internet. It also includes going over the table of contents in the front of a book, reading the introduction and/or instructions of the material and looking at the headings of each paragraph to get a basic understanding of the material. It might also be helpful to talk with a friend, teacher, or librarian to get a better understanding. Review is important because it identifies areas of strength and weakness. A review might be someone else’s ideas about the material.

Reading tutorial: Plan
A reading tutorial comes with plans and exercises that test the student’s strengths and weaknesses with certain skill areas. There might be companion books, as well as independent reading. Students should pace themselves and not try to accomplish everything in a couple of days or even weeks. They should not get bogged down doing every exercise. Practicing what is learned involves reading a variety of books, articles, poems or even plays at the level a student understands. A student should know at least 80 percent of the words to understand what they are reading.
