Reading Skills

Reading Skills – The Nation’s Report Card
Reading skills in the United States are at all-time lows. A major study in 2005 revealed that more than two-thirds of U.S. students are below grade level in fourth grade, with over one-third of them at or below the second grade reading level. By the eighth grade, reading skills aren’t improving, with more than two-thirds of students still reading below grade level (Perie, M., Grigg, W., and Donahue, P. The Nation’s Report Card: Reading 2005. U.S. Department of Education, 2005).

Reading Skills – The Rest of the Bad News
The state of reading skills in America doesn’t improve with studies conducted by other agencies and organizations. In fact, at least 20 million of the nation’s 53 million school-age children are poor readers -- about two out of five children (Henry, 2001). If a child is a poor reader at the end of first grade, there is an almost 90% probability that the child will be a poor reader at the end of fourth grade (Boyer, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. 1991). Sadly, three-quarters of students with poor reading skills in third grade will remain poor readers in high school (Shaywitz, 1997).

“Given the high prevalence of reading problems, it is much more likely for your child to have a reading problem than almost any other physical problem for which he is being checked.”

-- Dr. Sally Shaywitz, Overcoming Dyslexia

Reading Skills – The Heart of the Struggle
Why are reading skills in America so low and so disheartening? Why do some students read well, while so many others continually struggle?

At LearningRx, we understand that underlying cognitive skills such as auditory processing, visual processing, attention, logic and reasoning, word attack, memory, and comprehension, are the foundations for reading. In fact, over 88% of the students who struggle with reading skills in the studies cited above, have weak cognitive skills in these core areas. Therefore, as part of our reading skills assessment, we focus on identifying weak cognitive skills so we can target them for development. Once underlying cognitive skills are strengthened, your student is ready to jump out of the statistics and into a lifetime of successful reading!

Reading Skills – The First Step Towards Dramatic Success
LearningRx understands the importance of diagnosing weak reading skills through proper cognitive assessment. Once weak cognitive skills are isolated, we can deliver dramatic results with our one-on-one training programs. Thousands of students have recorded huge gains in reading skills at LearningRx Centers over the last two decades. Through our reading assessment and cognitive skills training, we have helped our students experience average reading gains of 4.6 years in 24 weeks or less. If your child is struggling with reading skills, we encourage you to schedule a reading and cognitive skills assessment at a LearningRx Center near you.
