Reading Improvement Programs – The Presumption
Reading improvement programs run the gamut from speed reading and “sight word” memory systems to passive tutoring and rules instruction. Generally, reading improvement programs focus on exactly that, “improvement.” However, the presumption with most reading improvement programs is that student-readers already have a solid reading base on which to improve. This presumption has been a source of parent-student frustration for a number of decades.
Reading Improvement Programs – The Reality
Reading improvement programs can only improve readers if they possess the basic cognitive skills required for long-term reading success. Extensive research now shows that proficient reading is the direct result of strong cognitive skills such as auditory processing. To thrive, reading improvement programs must return students to this foundational level, strengthen cognitive skills, and then put these stronger mental abilities to effective use. The key to long-term reading improvement is core strength in basic cognitive abilities.
Reading Improvement Programs – The Proven Training System
At LearningRx, our reading improvement program begins with the basics. We start with sound blending, segmenting, and analysis. Students are trained to segment words into isolated units (“phonemes”) and blend these isolated sounds into words. We use “nonsense words” in our training, so students don’t rely on their memory of known words. We then use encoding (spelling), decoding (reading), and writing exercises to make the reversibility of the sound/letter code clearer with practice.
Within weeks, the LearningRx reading improvement program takes the student from simpler sound units to more complex sound sequences. After the student has learned the most probable spelling for each sound, the less probable, alternative spellings are introduced. Through training, the letter/sound patterns and the probability of their appearance are stored in the student’s long-term memory, rather than subject to unreliable usage rules. Finally, additional complexities are introduced, such as “overlaps” in the sound/letter code, and exercises are added to teach how these letters overlap with various sounds. Incredibly, students using this reading improvement program have averaged over four years of improvement in less than six months of training.
Reading Improvement Programs – Achievement and Success
The LearningRx reading improvement program simply makes reading and spelling agree with the logic of our alphabetic system. In contrast to most reading improvement programs that passively teach rules and lessons that are easily forgotten, LearningRx trains the brain. By using patent pending processes, the student attains quick, practical, automated mastery of reading and spelling that will last a lifetime.

“My heart breaks for parents today. There is a reading crisis in America. It touches one out of three homes with school age children. Is your home one of them? If it is, I know you’re anxious for that child who cannot read well. In our society, life’s opportunities are linked so closely to a person’s ability to read, that reading well is essential for success.”
