Reading achievement tests: Overview
Reading achievement tests are designed to measure achievement at the time of testing and not designed to predict any further behavior. There is no one reading test that measures reading skills comprehensively. Different reading tests measure different types of reading skills. There are two important realities in testing: reading comprehension is a complex entity, and students with poor reading comprehension may struggle with a variety of deficits. Important areas that should be stressed are word identification, word comprehension, and word knowledge and word recognition. A combination of all of these areas measures reading achievement.
Reading achievement tests: Assessment
Reading achievement tests can measure achievement ranging from pre-reading abilities through adult reading. The pre-reading level contains subtests that measure literacy concepts, oral language concepts, letter-sound correspondence and story listening comprehension. Students are not required to read at this level, as they choose answers from pictures or symbols. Pictures are always identified by the teacher.
A beginning school reading level contains subtests that measure use of initial consonants and consonant clusters, use of final consonants and consonant clusters, use of vowels, and the recognition of story words. At this level children are asked to choose pictures with names that begin or end with certain letters, to read words, and to read simple sentences. The teacher reads most of the questions to the children, who then choose answers from pictures or words.
Grades 1 through 12 are designed to provide a general assessment of reading achievement. Subtests include word decoding, word knowledge and comprehension.
Reading achievement test: Remedial action
Reading achievement tests could also be a battery of tests that provide various measures of reading achievement. This is called an individually administered diagnostic reading test. A word identification subtest measures a student’s ability to recognize words at sight. Another subtest measures the ability to use phonic and structural analysis skills to identify silly, or nonsense, words. Word comprehension measures knowledge of word meanings through formats utilizing antonyms, synonyms and analogies. Students might also be asked to read and understand a short passage and then supply a key word missing from the passage. You can get help if your child is struggling in any of these areas.
