LearningRx Offers Tips On How To Keep Kids’ Minds Sharp

LearningRx centers offer ideas to parents for this summer

Colorado Springs, CO (Grassroots Newswire) June 6, 2007
– While few would argue that summer is the time for kids to enjoy a long break from the school year, savvy parents know that enjoying warm weather doesn’t have to equal ‘mind melt.’

To help kids keep their brains sharp during the school hiatus, national brain-training company, LearningRx offers a list of mentally stimulating games for kids starting as young as four. Most of the games are free and can be played in the car.

“Just as physical training improves the body, mental training improves the brain,” said Dr. Ken Gibson, founder of LearningRx. “There are seven major learning skills parents should focus on with their kids: attention, working memory, processing speed, long-term memory, logic and reasoning, auditory processing, and visual processing. These skills can easily be exercised or energized during the summer with the right activities.”

Here are just a few of the "brain-training" games to be played this summer:

  • Mental Tic Tac Toe: Similar to traditional Tic Tac Toe, this game uses a "mental" grid numbered 1 to 9. Players have to remember where their opponent has already been and call out an unoccupied space. The player who calls an occupied space loses. Focuses on attention, logic and reasoning and working memory.

  • Rhyme Time: One participant says a word and then another comes up with a word that rhymes. Participant No. 1 must think of a third word that rhymes and so on. This develops auditory analysis, which is important for reading and spelling as well as processing auditory instruction.

  • Make a Movie in your Head: Start with a subject like a puppy and then have your child help create what the puppy looks like: his size, if he is sitting or running around, his color, etc. Have your child talk about where the puppy is: next to a doghouse, in the forest, etc. Have your child add other subjects: the weather, what the dog is saying, etc. By developing pictures with color, size, perception, sound, and background, kids learn how to develop a more complete picture, which will lead to better comprehension.
