Nonverbal Learning Disability – The Quiet Developmental Disorder
Nonverbal Learning Disability (also called Nonverbal Learning Disorder or NLD) is most often due to weak visual processing skills and often goes undiagnosed. For some reason, the processing of nonverbal or volition-based information is deficient, often manifesting itself as silent struggles with visual, spatial, organizational, evaluative, and intuitive functions.
Nonverbal Learning Disability – The Characteristics
Young children with Nonverbal Learning Disability are typically good students with average-to high-IQ’s. Sometimes NLD students are labeled as “gifted” at an early age because of what appears to be above-grade vocabulary, memory, and reading skills. These children excel in auditory processing and retention skills, which means they learn better through hearing, rather than seeing (visual processing).
Students with Nonverbal Learning Disability do fine in the early grades, until struggles such as weak motor or imagery skills start getting in the way of normal advancement. As these children get older, NLD reveals itself in other areas such as peer interaction, problem solving, and physical awkwardness. As the years go on, these students struggle more and more with organizing their studies, following instructions, completing homework, writing thoughtful essays, and comprehending the “bigger picture.” Here’s a partial list of what to look for:
-
Motor Skills – Problems with coordination, balance, and “graphomotor” skills (writing/cursive).
-
Conceptual Skills – Difficulties with larger concepts, problem-solving, and cause-and-effect relationships.
-
Visual-Spatial Skills – Issues with visual imagery, visual processing, and spatial relations.
- Social Skills – Struggles with proper peer interaction, nonverbal communication, and new situations.
Nonverbal Learning Disability – The Answer is “Brain Training”
Sadly, teachers and parents often diagnose Nonverbal Learning Disability as disinterest, laziness, or rudeness in school and social situations. That’s why proper assessment is so crucial! These are smart kids with a cognitive barrier to success. Remarkably, this barrier is now totally understood and totally treatable through brain training!
At LearningRx, we understand the root cause of Nonverbal Learning Disability. More importantly, we’ve developed a comprehensive assessment and cognitive training program that delivers dramatic results! We drive to the root of the visual processing weakness, isolate the specific issues, and train the brain to totally defeat NLD for a lifetime.
