Securing help at LearningRx begins with an assessment of the student's cognitive skills strengths and weaknesses. The Woodcock-Johnson III (WJIII) Tests of Cognitive Abilities and the Gray Oral Reading Tests are the standard assessment tools used at LearningRx. These tests identify and measure an individual's skill level in the following critical areas:

  • Auditory Processing
  • Logic and Reasoning
  • Long-Term Memory
  • Processing Speed
  • Visual Processing
  • Word Attack Skills
  • Working Memory
These measurements are used to identify weakness in an individual’s cognitive skills from which a customized training program is developed. This training targets and strengthens the student’s weaknesses, and enhances and integrates their entire cognitive skill set. Upon completion of the program, students are tested again to measure any improvement.

The tables below report average skill gains experienced by LearningRx students in the 2002-2003 reporting period. The results shown are for students that had measurable deficiencies in that particular cognitive skill.

ThinkRx
ThinkRx training is designed to target and strengthen specific cognitive skills. The following table shows the results from 1711 students that completed ThinkRx training sometime during the span of months from August 2002 to July 2003. ThinkRx training lasts approximately 12 weeks, and students achieved the gains reported below, in that 12-week period.

The first column lists the specific cognitive skill measured. The second column shows the average improvement following the training as reported in years of improvement after completing the 12-week ThinkRx cognitive skills training program. In other words, if a ten-year old entered the program with the auditory analysis skills of an 8-year old, on average, the child achieved a gain of 6.8 years. In essence he or she graduated the program not only up to, but over 4 years above his or her age level. Changes such as these can lead to dramatic improvements in academic performance.

Cognitive Skill Tested Average Gains
Processing Speed 2.4
Working Memory 3.7
Visual Processing 2.5
Auditory Analysis 6.9
Logic & Reasoning 3.7

ReadRx
ReadRx is LearningRx’s reading program that literally rebuilds a student’s reading system on an efficient sound-to-code foundation. It takes full advantage of the increased cognitive skill strength produced by ThinkRx training, and revolutionizes the students ease and efficiency in reading in approximately 24 weeks. The following table shows the results in the critical Word Attack skill from 224 students that completed the ReadRx program between August 2002 and July 2003. Word attack is the ability to read new or unfamiliar words.

Cognitive Skill Tested Average Gains
Word Attack
3.6

The table indicates the average years of improvement that students gained in this critical skill as a result of the 18-week ReadRx program. In other words, if a fourth grader entered the program with the word attack skills of a second grader, he or she could expect to leave the program reading above a fifth grade level.
