Learn to Read for Kids: Reading Should be Fun
Getting a chance to learn to read, for kids, should be a fun and mysterious experience. Uncovering the stories and understanding that come from reading, though challenging, should be exciting and not frustrating. As a child starts to understand language and the meanings of words, reading is simply the decoding of symbols that stand for the words and meanings they already know. Reading can be very enriching, and in general, the better a child reads, the better they will do in school, because good reading is important for mastery of every subject.

But suppose your child can’t learn to read. For kids who struggle with reading, the world of education can seem a very scary place. For instance, they may be asked to do a word problem. The math might come easily to them, but if they can’t understand the task because the words aren’t making sense, they’ll get the math wrong too. Or maybe they are asked to read a short story and then tell about it in front of the class. How frustrating and scary to know that you will be called on to tell the class something you read, but didn’t understand. For most, it takes almost no thought or effort to learn to read. For kids with dyslexia, or visual processing problems, or other cognitive skill weaknesses, it is another story.
