Improve Reading Skills – The Daunting State of Affairs
The studies are clear – U.S. students need to improve reading skills. According to the “Nation’s Report Card” in 2005, more than two-thirds of American children are reading below grade level (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Washington, DC: 2005).

“Given the high prevalence of reading problems, it is much more likely for your child to have a reading problem than almost any other physical problem . . .”

Improve Reading Skills – A Training Method That Works
Want to improve reading skills? The key is to strengthen underlying cognitive skills such as auditory processing, visual processing, and memory. Many reading programs offer to improve reading skills, but only those grounded in cognitive assessment and training have the established, long-term results.
At LearningRx, we use cognitive skills training programs to strengthen weak mental tools. Over the last two decades, this has been proven to be the most effective method for improving reading skills. We pair students with one-on-one trainers who take them through customized sets of “brain training” tasks for up to 24 weeks. Using workbooks, metronomes, timed drills, and other exercises, trainers coach the students through brain “work outs.” The results are dramatic!
Improve Reading Skills – A Return to the Cognitive Fundamentals
At LearningRx, we improve reading skills by returning to the basics of sound blending, segmenting, and processing. First, students practice segmenting words into “phonemes” (isolated units of sound). Then, they blend those units of sound into more complex sequences. Finally, after the most probable spellings for each sound sequence are learned, the less probable, alternative spellings are introduced. Through a variety of training exercises, the brain memorizes the sound/letter patterns and the probability of their appearance. Remarkably, students using this cognitive-based reading program improve reading skills by over four years in less than six months of training!
Strengthening weak cognitive abilities and expanding strong cognitive abilities is the key to improved reading. Processing speed, auditory processing, logic and reasoning, and memory are a few cognitive areas stretched and strengthened during our programs. The training regimen is rather intense, yet fun and encouraging. Students get energized as they experience the quick and dramatic results for themselves. At LearningRx, we don’t just improve reading skills; we improve grades, confidence, and self-esteem.
