The History of Special Education starts just after World War II in the United States

History of Special Education: The 1950s & 60s
The Civil Rights Movement added more momentum in the 1950s and in the 1960s more and more school access was allowed for children that had disabilities in both the local and state levels. By 1975 Congress approved an act that was intended to help states protect the rights of children with disabilities as well as their families.
History of Special Education: Up to the 1990s
This act, known as the "Education for All Handicapped Children Act" was expanded in its reach in 1986 and then again in 1990. In 1990 the act was renamed the "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act" commonly known by its acronym: IDEA.
