Dyslexia Test – The Misunderstandings and Fears
A “Dyslexia Test” conjures up dread for many parents trying to cope with reading struggles in their families. Why my child? He’s not “slow.” What have I done wrong in raising my child?
Indeed, dyslexia is a technical (sometimes scary sounding) word. However, dyslexia simply means “difficulty with reading.” Therefore, a “Dyslexia Test” is nothing more than a reading assessment to help identify a student’s specific areas of reading struggle.
Don’t be apprehensive about a dyslexia test for your student – it’s just a matter of targeted awareness. Contrary to widespread belief, dyslexia is generally not a sign of low intelligence. Dyslexic students often demonstrate incredible abilities in subjects that don’t require certain cognitive skills. Strengthening these underlying skills can truly break the final barrier to becoming an exceptional reader and overall student.
Dyslexia Test – The Truth Underlying Reading Success
When it comes to dyslexia tests, research shows that approximately 88% of reading disorders are caused by problems in sound recognition and awareness (Institute of Health and Child Development, 1985-1995). Therefore, understanding your child’s cognitive skill levels in these areas will help lay the foundation for a lifetime of solid reading.

Pre-K or Kindergarten – Difficulty recognizing rhymes, remembering names, recognizing letter shapes, or developing basic language skills.
End of First Grade – Difficulty learning the alphabet and corresponding letter sounds, applying phonics to reading, spelling basic sight words, or reading aloud with some fluency.
End of Second Grade – Difficulty recalling facts, using phonics to sound out multi-syllable words, or correctly spelling previously studied or commonly seen words.
Ages Nine and Up – Difficulty with reading and spelling at grade level, reading with fluency and comprehension, reading out loud in front of others, or inordinate amounts of homework.
