Dyslexia Symptoms – The Misconceptions
Dyslexia symptoms might not be what you think. Many people mistakenly associate dyslexia with reversing letters or seeing words backwards, so many dyslexic students go unidentified and untreated. Actually, dyslexia simply means that someone has difficulty reading. Therefore, rather than reversed letters, dyslexia symptoms are more generally viewed as struggles with reading fluency, reading out loud, or reading new words. Dyslexic students often avoid reading and show little desire to read better. When reading is absolutely necessary, they read slowly and with little or no comprehension.
Dyslexia Symptoms – The General Signs
Although dyslexia refers to a general difficulty with reading, students may exhibit specific and identifiable dyslexia symptoms at an early age. These include:

Assembling word parts – The student copes by breaking words into smaller pieces that are easier to recognize than the whole word. These "sub-words" are often mispronounced and letters are used in more than one word part (for example, “student” may be read as stud-dent).
Common phonetic errors – The student decodes words correctly from a phonetic basis, but this means he or she struggles with many irregularly spelled words (for example, “honey” may be read as hone-ee).
Whole word guessing – The student reads the first couple letters and then guesses a known word that is similar in length and form (for example, “fork” may be read as food).
Limited code knowledge – The student’s incomplete knowledge of the spelling and sound codes causes him or her to incorrectly spell the correct number of sounds (for example, “made” may be written as mad).
Site Reading – Root words are easily recognized, but other forms or conjugations of words are not (for example, “funny” may be read as fun).
Letter naming – The student will read a word by saying the letter names (for example, “great” may be read as gee-ar-ee-ay-tee).
Complete guessing – Wild guesses are made based solely on word context.
