Different Learning Styles: Simplified
The different learning styles show an individual which method is presumed to allow them to learn best. The three main styles are visual, auditory, and tactile. Most people are a different mixture of each style while maintaining a particular strength in one. Although categorizing an individual into the three different styles is over-simplified, it can give a general sense of clarity for those that agree with it. It is by no means concrete. If you have a hard time determining which learning style is most dominant for you, there are most likely different aspects that affect the way you learn and the three basic categories may not be a helpful representation.

Different Learning Styles: Other Influencing Factors
Setting aside the one, two, three method of categorizing the different learning styles, we must recognize that there are other factors that influence the way people learn. Sociological learners learn best in groups while others learn best by themselves. Many students learn best with a linearly logical presentation while others prefer a less structured way of learning and favor a more creative approach. There are environmental factors that can influence a person’s best way of learning as well such as temperature, noise level, brightness of the room, and the amount of time something takes to learn. Some students even learn best when at home in an informal setting versus a more formal setting at school. With all the different styles and factors influencing the way we learn, is there something that ties them all together? The answer is yes.

Different Learning Styles: The Role Cognitive Skills Play
Cognitive skills affect all the learning styles. When an individual is weaker in certain areas of learning it’s because they have corresponding weak cognitive skills. Cognitive skills support an individual’s ability to learn. As a result, cognitive skills directly affect an individual’s learning style. Hence, the best way to utilize the different styles and factors that influence learning is to train the cognitive skills. Why not take advantage of all the learning styles?
