Brain Training Exercises: Why Are They Important?
The best way to get a bigger, smarter brain is with brain training exercises. Just as an athlete trains his body to perform with more agility, anyone can train their brain to function more efficiently. These exercises are designed to focus on and improve weak areas of the brain’s learning capacity. Let’s go back again to the athlete: if a runner has a weakness, say, a bad ankle, he will not become a better runner by simply “pushing through” the pain. He needs to focus. He needs to take a break, and focus on the weak area until it is strong, and once the weakened area is strong, his overall performance will be much better. This is the way it works with the brain also. If the brain has a weakness in the area of visual processing, for example, a person’s ability to read will be impaired. Brain Training Exercises: Some Examples
These brain training exercises are not like the kind of drills you do in a tutoring session. In tutoring, a student is asked to repeat and re-learn information, facts, and formulas. But in a brain training session, the focus is not upon information, but upon strengthening the weak areas of the brain itself. Imagine that you are looking at a poster full of colored arrows — red, blue, green and yellow — pointing up, down, left and right. Now, your trainer puts on a metronome — tick, tick, tick — and you are asked to read the arrows from right to left, calling out the colors along with the metronome’s speed. It’s pretty easy. The next step is to call out the directions the arrows are pointing. Again, pretty easy. The third test is harder, and begins to really challenge the brain. You are asked to call out the direction of every red and blue arrow, but the color of every green and yellow arrow. This is tougher! The variations continue, and get more difficult. But this exercise, when mastered, has proven to dramatically improve a person’s divided attention skills. Brain training exercises really work!
