Auditory Integration Training
Auditory Integration Training: Quick Facts
Designed by Dr. Berard, auditory integration training was designed originally to treat auditory system disorders such as hearing loss and hearing distortions. After 30+ years the auditory integration training program has been used to treat auditory processing disorders (A variety of problems with the brain that interfere with processing auditory information.) These problems are believed to cause distress and confusion in people with learning disabilities which, in turn, is said to interfere with the natural learning process as well as attention and comprehension.
Auditory Integration Training: The Actual Procedure
During a typical procedure in auditory integration training, an individual is played music which has been filtered and modified to randomize the frequencies. Familiar sounds are used first as more complex and lesser known sounds are gradually integrated. The random frequencies aim to mobilize and exercise the inner ear and brain. This normalizes not only an individual’s hearing but the ways that the brain processes auditory information. The auditory integration training consists of 20 procedures over a course of 10 to 20 days while each procedure lasts 30 minutes each during the auditory integration training.
The biggest benefit of auditory integration training is to help people who have hypersensitivities to certain frequencies or have trouble hearing because of white noise. Evidence has shown improvement within the areas of hearing normalization. Without these hearing problems, individuals will no longer have the problems that interfered with their learning, attention, and comprehension. Unless an individual has trouble hearing because of white noise or hypersensitivities, most people don’t need auditory integration training.
Most individuals with auditory issues need better phonemic awareness skills. Phonemic awareness is a cognitive skill that allows us to link together speech sounds and letters in words. In turn it gives us the capability to hear and analyze specific sounds. Without this foundational skill, many auditory, reading, and comprehension problems can occur. (Learn more information on phonemic awareness). LearningRx offers an assessment to find out which areas an individual struggles in along with cognitive skills training if necessary. Our programs incorporate auditory elements into many procedures for the biggest improvements. To get a better understanding of what your best options are, contact a local LearningRx near you.
