Attention Issues in Children – The Role of Attention “Skills”
Attention issues in children have parents and educators concerned. The ability to attend with focus, clarity, and purpose is a skill everyone needs. Students are particularly in need of good attention skills. They must be able to attend to instructions, focus on the details of assignments, and stay on task until an assignment is completed. Attention abilities are not just behavioral patterns. They are also cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are the underlying mental abilities that enable us to process information, analyze sounds and images, create associations, and yes, attend with purpose and clarity.

There are different kinds of attention that must be exercised if a student is to learn successfully. These are sustained attention, selective attention, and divided attention skills. These skills can be identified, measured, and trained. Strengthening weak attention skills usually results in dramatic improvement in behaviors typically associated with ADD or AD/HD. A dramatic example is anecdotal evidence gathered over the years from LearningRx cognitive skills trainers. Although we can't guarantee a cure, approximately half those "requiring" medication prior to training do not "require" it after completing the full 12 weeks of training. These observations give hope to parents that want more for their children than a lifetime of medication.

Attention Issues in Children – Cognitive Weakness, Frustration, and ADD
It is not uncommon for individuals with ADD and AD/HD symptoms to have weak cognitive skills. This is very often a significant contributing factor to a student's frustration with learning. Frustrated students act out in school. This frustration and inattention is often identified as ADD when, in fact, it is a cognitive skill weakness that can be identified and corrected.

A simple cognitive skill assessment from LearningRx can reveal the strengths and weaknesses of an individual's underlying learning skill set. Once weak cognitive skills are identified, LearningRx can customize appropriate cognitive skill training exercises to attack the weakness and strengthen the skill. Proper cognitive training can often help resolve the learning difficulties and frustrations experienced by individuals diagnosed with ADD or AD/HD. Weak cognitive skills are not the only cause of ADD symptoms, but they are a common reason for learning struggles and frustration. If weak attention, or other cognitive skills, is the source of your child's symptoms, LearningRx may be the solution you have been seeking.

Attention Issues in Children – Cognitive Training is a Positive Alternative
Medication is a common solution to manage the behavioral problems that can exist in the person identified as Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Medication, however effective, only serves to mitigate symptoms. It does nothing to solve the underlying problems that can be contributing factors to a student's attention struggles. Few parents are happy giving their child drugs to control their behavior. If attention struggles contribute to your child's frustration and inattention at school, LearningRx cognitive training is a very positive alternative to special education isolation or common medication therapy.

LearningRx Programs
The ThinkRx and ReadRx programs are designed to correct deficiencies in cognitive learning skills. Sustained attention, selective attention, and divided attention skills can be enhanced. The student's cognitive skills development, which includes attention training, not only provides the tools for strong learning, but improves the student's ability to perform in other academic areas. In addition, the training frequently improves the child's self-esteem. Strengthened attention skills frequently lead to greater success and much less frustration for those suffering from Child Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), or dyslexia symptoms.

If you or someone you know struggles to learn or read, has difficulty paying attention or staying on task, or generally struggles in school, one or more weak underlying cognitive skills may be at the root of the problem. If this is the cause of the learning difficulty, it can be corrected, and you can experience a lifetime of faster, easier learning and reading.
