“The first big event or moment that I felt was a success was Mark’s attitude about LearningRx. He loved coming and really looked forward to it. He never complained about our “homework” and worked on it faithfully. I believe the biggest change I see is in his memory. It’s like he’s tapped into a new part of his brain. Also, I’ve been very pleased with his progress at the start of this new school year. He comes home and works on his homework every night without being reminded or nagged. It’s been very peaceful.

Mark also had utmost respect for Kelly, his instructor. She worked with him on time management and personal accountability for his schoolwork. I’m sure that’s a big part of why we’re not having homework hassles.”

“She “owns” more of her homework and responsibility for it. She has plans of how to get her homework done and arrange her time. Her self-esteem is greatly (and ongoing) improving. She is learning to see if she skipped questions. She is learning to take risks and ask questions. She is seeing her teachers as less of her problems. She has stopped expecting me to just tell her an answer. In fact, she’s not really asking for help! My delightful daughter now has tools to succeed in all areas of her life. Her world has opened up and is far less complicated and scary – to just be avoided. I see her sitting and enjoying the new benefits and looking at her world and I suspect her next step will be to just dive in and live because she senses there is nothing to be afraid of or hold her back. Thank you for people and a program that really makes a difference for a lifetime. We love you!”

“After seven years of struggling in school, my husband and I were looking for something that might help our son, Billy. We had been told that Billy didn’t process information, but as to where the breakdown occurred, and to what extent, couldn’t be determined. We had done the school’s IEP program and tutoring, yet Billy continued to struggle. We were amazed and relieved to discover that LearningRx could not only find where his processing deficit was located, but also the extent of it.

Prior to the program, Billy spent hours in an evening doing his homework assignments – needing much help. He was frustrated with the amount of time it took away from playing, and was noticing that his peers didn’t need to work so hard. It took its toll on his self-esteem. My husband and I worried about his future ability to function independently and successfully at the college level. After the program, Billy was able to complete twice the homework in half the time…without any help from me. His grades improved dramatically (from B’s and C’s to mostly A’s and some B’s). We saw his self-esteem and self-confidence grow, and no longer worried about his ability to function academically at the college level. Thank you so much for everything.”

“I wanted to just drop a note on progress after the first quarter closed and parent teacher conferences.

Elizabeth had no missing assignments this quarter and her report card had no failing grades. She is off of academic probation. In Physics she is still going too fast on some assignments and tests, but we are working on slowing her down. The Physics teacher had her as a freshman and notices a big difference this year (she also wasn't on medicine at that point).

I see a big difference from last year and this first quarter of her Junior year. She does not put off starting assignments and does most of her homework during her study halls. She pays attention to due dates and I don't have to check her work anymore for completion or completeness. Her stress level is down and so is mine.

She is on the Academic Challenge team and is developing confidence as she sees success. She is turning her attention to getting her learner's permit so she can drive her senior year and she seems to be ready to move in that direction. She is looking forward to playing on the tennis team next fall and is considering which classes she will take senior year. Granted, the medicine is a great help and has been for many years, but I know that her work at LearningRx has contributed to her progress.”

“I see a big improvement in Landan’s self-image. He feels smarter since he has graduated. Landan’s teachers saw changes in him at the end of the school year overall. I think that the reason they didn’t see drastic improvement was because he just hadn’t been in the program long enough before school was out.

Landan is not excited about going back, but isn’t stressed out about it like he normally would be, which makes me hopeful for a successful school year.

I am very anxious to see what his teachers this year will have to say about him. Landan worked on researching information and then making a poster for 4-H this week. He worked non-stop for 3 hours. Before, he would have become frustrated and probably quit after about 30 minutes. I see this diligent work as a very good example of how far he has come along in the program. Thank you so much!”

The following comments come from parents of LearningRx graduates from the Akron/Bath, Ohio, training center. Additional information is available on request.

“I am like many parents who have had a child who struggled in school. I saw his anguish and pain every time Monday came around. Then there were the never-ending reports that he is behind, he needs after-school tutoring, summer school, and so on. I thought, if I can only help him more with homework; maybe this will pass; it’s just a phase; and so on. To live in denial was simply torture, knowing the pain that my child was carrying. Then one day, walking though a park near my house, I picked up a flyer from LearningRx. It was covered with mud, but I read it. It gave me a tool to see what it was all about. I owed it to my son to find resources that could help him because I was at the end, and crying was not solving the issue.

Then I made the call. I set the appointment, and my son was tested. The truth was revealed to me that he was behind two years in every area. I could no longer hide behind denial. Something had to be done. I am a single mother of three, and I saw the challenge—not only my son’s cry for help, but the price to pay for his help. I decided that even if I expected my son to go to college, putting away for his future was useless if he did not believe he could get there. Like many parents, I struggle to make ends meet. Seeing the sticker price can be shocking, but no more shocking than my child’s tears. I decided that I was going to help my son. Working full time and attending school full time, I chose to find a part-time job at night and cut anything that was not necessary. I was willing to do what I had to do to meet my goal.

It took me about six months before I could walk into LearningRx to let them know that I believed in them to help my son, and they did. I cannot express loud enough how it has helped my son to be the happiest child in this world. He has been chosen for school pride, made safety patrol, gotten A’s B’s. He makes sure that we are on time to school. His frustration now is not that he can’t do it but that he could have done better than 89% and that he could have read more books. The state test resulted in high marks, and summer school is no longer on the horizon for this wonderful child.

I can only encourage any parent not to wait. The money will never come if you do not make a goal for it to be there. The new car can wait, shopping, entertainment—they come and go without any substance of equity like your child’s future. I will never regret those sleepless nights.

Thank you, LearningRx.”

“Our story started the second week of Jake’s fourth grade school year… All summer we had worked with Jake to improve his reading and confidence. He was actually excited about school starting for the first time ever! The first week of school went well. Then, the second week the teacher sent home a notice for the reading tutor. Jake was distraught. This would be his fourth year with a reading tutor! Jake’s confidence was gone again. After working so hard with the home tutor all summer, we thought he wouldn’t need the reading tutor again. We knew we had to do something to change this pattern because it obviously wasn’t working.

We started by taking Jake to the doctor for advice on options. Then, we had him tested at school for learning disabilities. At the evaluation with the counselor, principal, and teacher, we were told Jake had issues with processing and “may just be an underachiever.”

We knew Jake wasn’t an underachiever. We live with him and see him excel in other areas daily. We started searching for a solution beyond school. We found LearningRx through a pamphlet at an area play place.

From the moment we came to LearningRx, Jake was treated fairly and encouraged. The positive attitude of everyone there made us sure this was the place for Jake. Jake was evaluated, and we were offered solutions—solutions that would help Jake overcome his issues in a positive, encouraging, and caring way. Jake’s first few weeks with the program were tough because he was being pushed to do things in a different way. We did have tears. But by the time Jake returned to school from Christmas break, his teacher was asking us what we had done because he had improved so much, so fast.

The following weeks we saw improvements in every aspect of Jake’s life. In school, his grades improved and so did his confidence. At home, homework was no longer a family task, and he is more helpful. In sports, his level of determination and commitment has soared. And, best of all, he is just more engaged in everything he does.

This program has been hard work, fun, positive, and an overall joy for Jake and us. Thank you.”

“Our son is much more confident in his daily life. He is a teenager who has struggled with paying attention and staying on task his whole life. He feels better about himself, and his skills across the board are better than they were before. He had some huge gains in both short-term and long-term memory. He is also using his newfound logic skills and, for the first time in his life, is getting organized and staying that way. We are so pleased with how much better things are for him! I would highly recommend this program! Check it out! You’ll be glad you did!”

“When our daughter started kindergarten, we did not expect her to have any problems. By the middle of the year the teacher told us she was behind the other children and by the end of the year was not sure she wanted to send her to first grade. I assured the teacher I would do whatever I could to make sure she was ready for first grade. Once summer began, I decided to have her tested at LearningRx. The testing was not your typical academic questions; it was very interesting. The results showed Kate was about a year behind where she should be. We knew focus and memory were problems and the desire to learn was not there. We started the program and Kate met once a week with a LearningRx trainer and I worked with her the other nights. The drills became more difficult, but on finishing the program I think Kate is in a good position for first grade. We need to continue practicing, but the skills we’ve both learned have made such a difference.”

(Student diagnosed with autism): “She comes home and does her homework immediately. She is getting approximately 70 to 75 percent of it correct now—before she would only get 40 percent correct on her own. She is more confident in herself. She attempts to tackle harder problems. She is a better reader and writer. Her math skills have improved. Her eye contact is better. She was selected to participate in the Northeastern Ohio Science Fair.”

“We visited a LearningRx seminar and brought our daughter, Jessica. She is 17 years old. It wasn’t what she wanted to do that evening, but she came willingly. Jessica did wonder, “Is this where dumb kids go?” After watching the presentation and participating in some activities, Jessica said, “Well, I guess I’d do something like this, but I would never go to tutoring.” She saw the program as challenging and liked the idea of competing against herself to pass levels.

We were pleased with the care that was taken to place Jessica with a trainer. We feel her trainer was a great personality match for Jessica, and her trainer quickly moved Jessica to difficult levels and pushed her through them. Jessica’s trainer worked hard with Jessica’s self-confidence, helping her to be sure of herself when giving answers and assuring her that when things got tough, they were working on areas that were most important.

We are so proud of our daughter. She never complained about coming to LearningRx. Her grades improved almost immediately. She has read a few books and was very proud of herself when she completed her first book. This child would previously do anything possible to get out of reading a book.

We wanted to see a change in Jessica’s confidence in herself. She would say many things about being dumb and that she couldn’t go to college because she was dumb. Who would have thought that in six months she would be applying for the “Seniors to Sophomores” program through The University of Akron for her senior year of high school? Students in this program go to college during there senior year of high school. There hasn’t been a word about feeling dumb. Now she wants to start college early! We couldn’t ask for anything more!”
